Pop star Katy Perry has been looking to expand her acting career, and reportedly has shown interest in joining the upcoming film based upon late Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury.

A source told the Mirror that Perry wants to play the role of Mary Austin, Mercury's girlfriend, in the film. The people behind the film have already secured director Stephen Frears for the production, with Sacha Baron Cohen set to play the titular frontman. Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor are reportedly offering the support and advising on the film.

The source says, "Katy would love to be in the film as she is such a huge fan. She would love to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha."

Austin and Mercury were a couple for six years in the '70s, and remained close even after they split. While Mercury didn't go public with his HIV diagnosis until close to death, one of the few people he did tell was Austin.
