Time to decide whether Journey's "Stone in Love (Those Summer Nights)" or Janis Joplin's "Summertime" advances past the first round of Ultimate Classic Rock's Greatest Summer Song tournament.

We’ve selected 32 of classic rock’s best summertime songs, and paired them off in 16 first-round duels. Over the next five weeks the field will be repeatedly cut in half by your votes, until we arrive at the greatest summer song ever made.

You wouldn't know it, but Journey's rock-radio staple "Stone in Love (Those Summer Nights)" wasn't one of the four Top 20 songs pulled from the nine-times-platinum Escape album (it made it to No. 13 on the mainstream rock chart, though). Still, there are few things more evocative of the season than this fun 1981 cut written by Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon.

Joplin's raw-boned take on the George Gershwin classic "Summertime" was featured on 1968's two million-selling Cheap Thrills, her last album with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Joplin would go solo the next year, releasing I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, but "Summertime" (as seen in the concert film Janis) would remain a highlight of her concerts.

Which will earn a trip to the second round? Listen to each song below, then decide. You can vote once per hour in each of the 16 first-round Greatest Summer Song battles until voting closes on July 27 at 11:59PM ET. Your choice for the Greatest Summer Song of all time will be revealed on Aug. 25, 2015.
