When John Lennon launched his solo career in the early '70s, he consciously created music that was simple, candid and free of the psychedelic frills he had explored with in the Beatles.

Around the same time, a rock trio started in England that was shooting from the complete opposite side of the spectrum. Emerson, Lake and Palmer were all about over-the-top extravaganza concerts, foam-shooting armadillos and three-disc live albums.

Every two months, the readers of Ultimate Classic Rock will decide which of eight legendary artists or bands will be remembered for their contributions to the genre. It's fair to say this is one of those "contrasting styles" match-ups, huh?

So who will it be? The man who wrote such painfully personal as 'Mother' and 'Working Class Hero' or the guys behind the mind-blowing majesty of 'Lucky Man' and 'Take a Pebble'?

Round one of the competition ends Sunday, Nov. 17, at 11:59 PM EST and the winner will be announced Monday, Dec. 2. Be sure to read our official rules here. Get those votes in! We’ll be revealing the rest of the November 2013 UCR Hall of Fame nominees and battle pairings in the coming days.
