Gregg Allman Honored With Post-Memorial Tribute Jam

Gregg Allman dedicated his life to music — and just a few hours after he was laid to rest in a private memorial service, friends and former bandmates gathered to pay tribute by playing together again.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Allman memorial tribute jam took place at the Big House, the Macon establishment otherwise known as the location of the Allman Brothers Band Museum. The report notes that while only 200 or so attendees were invited to watch, a larger assortment of well-wishers congregated outside the building during the performance.

Participants in the four-hour jam session reportedly included Allmans confederates such as drummer Jaimoe Johanson, guitarist Scott Sharrard, bassist Berry Oakley Jr. and percussionist Mark Quiñones; the set list, fittingly, included a number of Allman Brothers Band classics, including the numbers captured in the fan-shot footage you can watch here.

“They all played for Gregg. It was a true celebration of his music and his legacy,” Allman’s manager, Michael Lehman, told the paper. “The family felt so loved. … Gregg was a special person. He penetrated a lot of people’s souls.”

As previously reported, Allman — who died May 27 at the age of 69 — was working on a studio album at the time of his death. That LP, titled Southern Blood, is currently being prepped for release, and may be the first in a series of records to come out of Allman’s estate — Lehman has indicated the existence of a “huge trove” of live recordings waiting to be collected.
