Tonight (Feb. 21) will see the debut of a new half-hour documentary series on VH1 Classic. Rock Icons premieres 10PM Eastern and, for its first episode, focuses on Rush singer-bassist Geddy Lee.

The show will take the viewer on a journey through an artist’s life, using interviews and rare archival footage. Other stars whose careers will be profiled on Rock Icons include Rob Halford, Ted Nugent, Ann Wilson, Dave Mustaine, Nikki Sixx, Slash, Daryl Hall, Joe Elliott, and Billy Corgan. The series is produced by Banger Films, who are responsible for such full-length documentaries as Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage and Super Duper Alice Cooper.

As you can see in the above video, Lee talks about how Rush came about its signature style. “The desire was just to make it better,” he said. “How can we maintain a three-piece band, yet have all the ambitions, musically, that we want to accomplish? We’re always trying to bring some new thing into our sound […] It’s all about more music and more melody.”

ABC News Radio reports that the episode will also feature interviews with Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart, and touch on such subjects as the death of Lee’s father, his love of baseball and his collection of rare instruments.

It’s a double dose of Lee on VH1 Classic tonight. Rock Icons will debut immediately following Lee’s appearance on the season premiere of That Metal Show. Earlier this week, Ultimate Classic Rock spoke with comedian and co-host Jim Florentine about his time on the show.
