Foreigner’s ‘Hot Blooded’ Given a Dramatic Reading by Stephen Colbert and Allison Janney

When Emmy Award-winning actress Allison Janney told Stephen Colbert that she employs dramatic readings of ’70s-era pop hits as an acting exercise, he had a quick suggestion: Why not recite Foreigner‘s “Hot Blooded” together?

As you can see in the video above, Janney borrows a ballpoint pen from the Late Show With Stephen Colbert desk, and dives right into the reading – using the pen as a thermometer prop. After she quite seriously repeats the title twice, Colbert removes his glasses to reply, “You don’t have to read my mind, to know what I have in mind.” Janney manages to hold it together. That is, until Colbert says, “I’ll show you lovin’ like you never knew.”

Janney told the host that she used to recite old nursery rhymes as monologues, but recently turned to songs like Foreigner’s. Apparently, it’s working. She has claimed seven Emmys over the years, beginning with four for The West Wing. She recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the show Mom, which – like The Late Show With Stephen Colbert – airs on CBS.

Foreigner took “Hot Blooded” to No. 14 in 1979 with a lineup that featured singer Lou Gramm. Guitarist Mick Jones, who co-wrote “Hot Blooded” alongside Gramm, still leads the band. They recently wrapped up a late-summer tour with singer Kelly Hansen.
