DVD of the Year – 2012 Ultimate Classic Rock Awards
We’ve got an interesting mix of releases in the DVD of the Year category of our 2012 Ultimate Classic Rock Awards. There are a handful of in-depth documentary style releases based on some of rock’s more intriguing personalities. There are also the tried-and-true rock concert DVDs, and a couple of classic films featuring a well-known band also found their way to our movie collections this year.
We’ll start with a few of the personality-driven DVDs. For instance, George Harrison‘s ‘Living in the Material World’ takes a look at the life of the “Quiet Beatle” and deals with more than just his musical side. There’s also Freddie Mercury‘s ‘The Great Pretender,’ which studies the theatrical Queen frontman’s life both on and off the stage.
On the concert side of things, we’ve got the Bachman and Turner set, ‘Live at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC,’ Crosby, Stills & Nash‘s ‘CSN 2012,’ Iron Maiden‘s ‘En Vivo,’ Motorhead‘s ‘The World Is Ours, Vol. 1′ and the Led Zeppelin reunion show, ‘Celebration Day.’ There’s also concert DVDs from Ozzy Osbourne (‘Speak of the Devil’), The Doors (‘Live at the Bowl ’68′), Robert Plant and the Band of Joy (‘Live From the Artists’ Den’), Styx (‘The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live’), and The Who (‘Live in Texas ’75′). Finally, the ‘Journeys’ DVD from Neil Young allows viewers to follow the vocalist on a road trip from home to a show in Toronto, but focuses largely on the performance itself.
The DVD category also offers two of the Beatles‘ films restored and reissued as ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ got new looks. Plus, there’s the analytical documentary on Pink Floyd — ‘The Story of Wish You Were Here.’
With a group of DVDs like this, it’s no wonder that the DVD of the Year is one of our most contentious categories. There’s a lot of great music and character studies in there, but which one grabbed you the most? Be sure to cast as many votes as you’d like between now and Jan. 15, 2013 (You can vote once per hour). The winners will be announced the following day.
