A Momentary Lapse? David Gilmour Identified as ‘Random Man’ by YouTube Star

YouTube star Zoella posted a picture she took of a “random man and his dog” a couple of years ago on Instagram. Yesterday, David Gilmour‘s wife identified this stranger as the Pink Floyd legend on Twitter.

By then, however, “#RandomMan” was already trending. (After all, it’s not like he’d been obscured by clouds!) So Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, joined in using the hashtag too. Her only complaint is that “Zoella’s shot of #randomman was so much better than mine.”

Samson’s post led people back to the original Instagram, where Zoella writes, “I don’t know this man, or his dog, but I feel like I captured a few moments between them that were too precious not to share. If you know this man, let him know these pictures exist as they may make him smile!”

What came next could be described by Floyd-savvy fans as the delicate sound of online outrage. Samson was also quick to add, however, that Gilmour was unaware of Zoella, as well.

Nevertheless, Zoella – whose real name is Zoe Sugg – has found herself caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom. At 25, she’s younger than all but two of Pink Floyd’s albums: 1994’s The Division Bell and 2014’s The Endless River. Zoella’s photograph was posted about the same time the latter arrived, even as Gilmour worked to complete his fourth solo record, 2015’s Rattle That Lock.

In the meantime, Zoella has quickly amassed more than 10 million subscribers to her fashion-focused YouTube channel, reportedly garnering ad rates as much as $28,000 a month. That should provide her with some small comfort after a few days of tongue lashings from various trolls, including one who memorably called Zoella “comfortably dumb.”

Gilmour returned to the road in December for another round of dates in support of Rattle That Lock, with more North American shows set for this year.
