David Bowie to Appear on Official British Money

David Bowie has been lionized on a new cycle of British currency. The singer was chosen along with three other famous Brixton residents for the Brixton pound. The 10 pound note will now carry the above image of the former Ziggy Stardust to celebrate the second anniversary of the currency.

Brixton is a district in London that has developed its own alternative to the sterling pound to promote local commerce. In addition to Bowie, academic and activist Lenford Kwesi Garrison is on the one pound note, Chicago Bulls and Great Britain basketball star Luol Deng is on the five pound note, and second world war secret agent Violette Szabo is on the 20.

Bowie is wearing 'Aladdin Sane' makeup. The 1973 album was the follow up to his breakthrough album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' in 1972. He's the first musician or artist of any sort to be included in the currency. It's the second time in recent weeks he's been honored in an unusual fashion. Earlier his likeness as Ziggy Stardust adorned a planned new mural for an Australian apartment building.
