David Bowie is whetting fans' appetites for his upcoming Blackstar album with a clip from the short film he's commissioned for the title track.

The footage, which you can watch above, was posted several days after the activation of Bowie's recently launched countdown site for the new LP, and arrives alongside an announcement that the "Blackstar" single — which is being officially referred to as "★" — will debut along with the film on Nov. 19.

Director Jonathan Renck, who's using the track as the theme song for his series The Last Panthers, helmed the Blackstar short film, which is being given a theatrical premiere at the Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn. It's also being aired as part of a Bowie video hour on the Palladia network, while U.K. viewers can look for its broadcast premiere on Sky Atlantic.

Details of the Blackstar album, which is due Jan. 8, have been kept largely under wraps, although Bowie's camp has dismissed early rumors of the record's allegedly "completely bonkers" sound as "inaccurate reporting on the sound and content" of the LP. The brief bit we've heard thus far suggests we're in for something other than a pop album — an impression backed up by Bowie's press release announcing the single premiere, which points out that "★" runs a full 10 minutes in length.

While the promotional campaign for Blackstar ramps up, Bowie's in the final stages of preparations for his Lazarus stage musical, which starts performances Nov. 18 and makes its official debut Dec. 7. He'll make a return to the stage — of a sort — when a SpongeBob SquarePants production featuring Bowie contributions arrives next year.
