The opening round of our new March Drum Madness competition sees one of the biggest names in music today square off against one of the inventors of rock drumming, Dave Grohl against Keith Moon.

We've placed 32 of the most famous drummers in classic rock history into our March Drum Madness bracket. Over the coming weeks, their ranks will be cut in half in each of five rounds until we arrive at your choice for the greatest rock drummer of all time.

Dave Grohl has had so much success as the guitar-playing frontman for Foo Fighters that it’s often forgotten that he made his name as the drummer for Nirvana. His explosive rhythms on the choruses of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are” and “Lithium” defined the nascent alternative sound that would dominate ‘90s rock. Moon, on the other hand, was practically the “lead drummer” of the Who. Never one to settle into a groove, Moon preferred fills that defied logic and even lent a bit of orchestral flair, as heard on classics like “The Real Me,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Love Reign O’er Me.”

So which one moves on to the round of 16? That’s your decision. You can vote once per hour in each of our 16 opening March Drum Madness battles until the first round closes on March 23 at 11:59PM ET. The ultimate winner will be revealed on April 7.
