The Pretenders leader Chrissie Hynde, who turns 61 on Sept. 7, has fronted one of rock's most accomplished and spirited groups for over three decades.

The Akron, Ohio native moved overseas in 1973 and spent the next few years shuttling between London, France and the States before forming the Pretenders in 1978. She went on to earn a place in rock history on the strength of songs like 'Middle of the Road,' 'Don't Get Me Wrong,' and 'Brass in Pocket.'

The band has seen their fair share of regroups and unfortunate drug-related deaths, but remain active and vital both on stage and in the recording studio.
