Charles Manson Is Still Single, Ladies

Charles Manson’s wedding plans appear to be on hold.

The 80-year-old Manson, serving life in prison for his part in a series of gruesome murders he was convicted of planning and ordering during the late summer of 1969, had his latest brush with infamy late last year, when word surfaced of his engagement to a much younger woman — Afton Elaine “Star” Burton — who’s spent years working to try and clear his name.

Now, NBC News reports that the couple’s marriage license will expire this Thursday — and since weddings aren’t performed during the week at California State Prison, Corcoran, they’ll need to register for a new one.

Reports at the time indicated that Manson’s engagement constituted something of a change of heart for the former cult leader, who’d earlier expressed disinterest in tying the knot, so some onlookers have wondered whether the license’s expiration might mean the wedding’s off. But according to an NBC source who says he’s in contact with Burton, the bride is still ready for her ring; the report says she “intends to obtain another 90-day license and go ahead with the marriage.”

As many classic-rock fans no doubt recall, Manson attempted a songwriting and recording career as a younger man, partly because he believed he could use his music to incite race riots, and briefly shadowed Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson. After being apprehended for the murders, Manson told authorities that the Beatles had hidden messages to him in their White Album, particularly in the song ‘Helter Skelter.’
