The New York born and bred vocalist and guitarist pictured in this 1959 yearbook photo was born on March 2, 1942. He would begin his career as the in-house songwriter for a record label before moving to the underground, eventually working his way toward a successful and several decade-long solo career. Through it all, he did things in the most unconventional way possible.

He recently collaborated with a hard rock band for a much-criticized project that their fans didn't quite get, which only served to remind us that this artist has always done things his way while he has walked on the wild side.

He frequently addressed personal experiences in his lyrics, namely sexuality and drugs. He also had the cojones to release a double album of feedback loops.

So who is this iconoclastic rocker?
