Born in 1967 in San Jose, Calif., this singer first gained national prominence in the early-'90s as frontman of a hard-edged alternative rock band that hailed from San Diego but was often mistakenly assumed to be from Seattle. Which made sense -- the singer's vocal style garnered frequent comparisons to Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. He also gained some notoriety after repeated drug-related arrests.

That band split apart in the early '00s, and the singer went on to front a Grammy-winning supergroup that featured three former members of Guns N' Roses. They put out just two albums before he left in 2008, reuniting with his former bandmates and embarking on a successful reunion tour later that year.

Last fall he raised a few eyebrows with the release of 'The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,' a collection of Christmas music.
