The precocious-looking British youngster pictured in this yearbook photo was easily one of the most prolific and best songwriters ever. He was a singer and a guitarist, as well.

He was inducted posthumously in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, but those accolades are almost unnecessary because it is largely agreed upon fact by musicologists and music fans that he was a true songwriting treasure. The proof? His songs have stood the test of time.

His life was tragically cut short in 1980. Seeing this photo of him at such a young and innocent age makes his needless loss at the hands of a gunman sting that much more. Imagine how much more expansive his songwriting catalog would be, had he lived.
