This singer/guitarist died of a heart attack back in 1995 at the age of 53, passing away just eight days after his birthday. But he left behind an incredibly respected legacy. He was voted No. 13 in Rolling Stone's '100 Greatest Guitarists of All-Time' issue. His band was also voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. The band's spirit of experimentalism and psychedelic sounds were its calling card.

He battled a weight issue for much of his life and even ended up in a diabetic coma in 1986, due to poor eating habits, drug use and unstable weight. He survived and went on to create music for several more years before finally succumbing to death.
