This late singer of a Cali pop rock band died in 1974 at the age of 32. Urban legend claimed she choked on a ham sandwich, which, of course, is not true. She died in her sleep of a heart attack at the height of her fame.

Born Ellen Cohen in Maryland, this larger-than-life presence had California dreams and she soared to career success on the maternal side of things.

Her band was eventually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, back in 1998.
