The late rocker featured in this yearbook photo has been dead nearly 20 years, but he is still beloved, revered, remembered and respected -- if maybe not fully understood -- all these decades later.

This, uh, mother of invention was always unpredictable with his psychedelic music, but as a graduate, doesn’t he look so prim and proper with that institutional cap and gown? Check out that soul patch, too. Or is that just a shadow cast on his chin? Feel free to debate, discuss, lather, rinse and repeat.

This photo was taken in 1958, and you can't tell from this photo that in just a few short years, he would hit his musical stride. The ‘60s were a definitive decade for him, but he remained productive and creative in the '70s and '80s, as well. And man, could he shut up and play that guitar!
