Fans of the late Buddy Miles, drummer for Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys and founding member of Electric Flag, can celebrate what would have been his 65th birthday on Sept. 5. Sadly, the beloved musician passed away in 2008 at age 60.

Miles' career started in his teens when he began playing in R&B and soul bands. Moving to Chicago gave him the opportunity to form Electric Flag, with whom he released two highly regarded albums.

He soon began collaborating with Hendrix and then joined up with the Band of Gypsys, playing on their only officially released, self-titled live album. Following Hendrix's 1970 death, Miles had a successful career as an artist and a producer.
