Poison frontman Bret Michaels has separated with fiancé and longtime love Kristi Lynn Gibson. The two had been dating since 1996, but called off their engagement, 20 months after Michaels proposed to finish his VH1 reality television show.

A representative tells People that "Although the couple have separated they remain great friends and are committed to jointly raising their two daughters." That would be 12-year-old Raine Elizabeth and seven-year-old Jorja Bleu.

The 41-year-old Gibson has been a public figure since she began dating the 'Unskinny Bop' singer 16 years ago. She often appears with him on red carpets, and stood by the 49-year-old as he recovered from a stroke, brain hemmorage and emergency appendectomy. No reason was given for the split. They were engaged in 2010 during the finale of the VH1 series 'Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It.'

Michaels will be staying busy as he deals with his new life as a bachelor. He's working on a new solo album while touring with Def Leppard alongside his Poison-mates through Sept. 15.
