Bono Thinks He Sings ‘Like a Girl’

After 35 years and more than 150 million records sold as the lead singer of U2, Bono has one of the most recognizable voices in rock music — but that doesn’t mean he actually enjoys the sound of it himself.

During a recent appearance on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ he admitted that he never listens to himself sing if he can help it. “If I hear our songs on the radio I tend to turn them down. Not because I don’t like them or believe in them. Actually, my voice annoys me. I always think I could have sang it better.”

But it isn’t just perfectionism that keeps Bono from being able to enjoy his own greatest hits. “I am sort of a macho, Irish guy,” he explained to Ellen, “and particularly in those ’80s songs, I think I sound like a girl.”

We’re not exactly sure what sort of women Bono’s been hanging out with, but aside from his magnificent ’80s mullet, it’s hard to hear much that’s feminine about the band’s classic arena rock. Whatever the reason, the U2 frontman is clearly in a reflective mood lately; he recently admitted that he questions the band’s ability to continue making relevant new music. Here’s hoping it’s just a bit of passing restlessness — “girl’s voice” or no, we aren’t ready for U2 to hang it up just yet.
