When 16-year-old Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir met Jerry Garcia (five years his senior) at a club in Palo Alto, CA would start the pair on a long, strange trip.

Instantly, the two took to one another and began their journey into music history. Just about halfway through the month, on Oct. 16, the rhythm guitarist for one of America's most beloved jam bands celebrates his 65th birthday.

Since Garcia's death, Weir has focused largely on his own band, Ratdog. In 2011, he founded the Tamalpais Research Institute (TRI Studios), a high-tech recording studio/music venue which live-steams concerts online.
