Bob Seger‘s career as a songwriter was acknowledged on Thursday (June 14) when he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York.

Seger opened the show by singing ‘Turn the Page,’ which came in at No. 22 on our countdown of the Top 100 Classic Rock Songs. He was inducted by fellow member Valerie Simpson who, with her late husband Nickolas Ashford, wrote many classic Motown songs, most notably the duets by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, such as ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,’ ‘Your Precious Love’ and ‘You’re All I Need to Get By.’ At the ceremony, Simpson performed Seger’s ‘We’ve Got Tonight,’ of which she said, “It’s one of the sexiest songs I know. It put more people in bed than I can imagine.”

Stevie Nicks was also at the ceremony, giving a Lifetime Achievement Award to Bette Midler. Nicks sang Midler’s 1979 hit, ‘The Rose,’ from the movie of the same name that was loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin.

Other inductees included Canadian folk singer Gordon Lightfoot and Jim Steinman, best known for the hits he wrote for Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler. American music icon Woody Guthrie was given the hall’s first-ever Pioneer Award. This year marks the 100th birthday of Guthrie, who died in 1967. His daughter, Nora, was on hand to accept the award.
