Frequently cited as the discerning Black Sabbath enthusiast’s all-time favorite album, ‘Vol. 4’ was recorded in sunny Los Angeles by a rising band that was already starting to unravel under the pressures of stardom, a punishing work schedule and escalating drug abuse (check out the live staple ‘Snowblind’ if you don't know which drug).

‘Vol. 4’ features everything Sabbath fans would die for: churning riff machines like ‘Supernaut’ and ‘Under the Sun’ (arguably the band’s heaviest song), a mesmerizing epic in ‘Wheels of Confusion,’ a catchy single in ‘Tomorrow’s Dream’ and even a piano ballad in ‘Changes.’

With music this diverse and appealing, it’s no wonder ‘Vol. 4’ easily achieved the same platinum sales enjoyed by Sabbath’s previous albums. But perhaps another reason for the record’s special place in fans’ hearts is that they knew that things would soon never be the same after this.
