Hear Comedian Bill Burr Talk About the Night Slash and Duff McKagan Surprised Him Onstage

Most of us will never know what we’d do if we found ourselves onstage with a couple of Guns N’ Roses alumni, but we’re pretty sure we wouldn’t handle it anywhere near as well as comedian Bill Burr.

Burr visited Marc Maron’s WTF podcast recently, and shared the story of how his musical hobby led to him accidentally playing drums with Slash and Duff McKagan during a charity concert organized by Velvet Revolver rhythm guitarist Dave Kushner. You can watch the performance above and listen to the whole conversation at WTF.

“Dave is such a great guy, he does a lot of stuff for charity. He knows all of those guys — the Guns N’ Roses guys, Velvet Revolver, STP,” said Burr. “So when he puts together a show for charity, it’s like an all-star band. You feel like you’re at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I went to a couple of these shows, and at one point, he said to me, ‘Hey, man, you wanna sit in on one song? You’re gonna do some stand-up and then maybe sit in?'”

Although Burr said he demurred at first, not wanting to be “that guy” who’d end up sticking out as the “jerkoff” on a stage full of famous rockers, he later got up the guts to accept the gig and joined in on rehearsals for a rendition of “Highway to Hell.” While he was admittedly daunted by the level of musicianship in the rest of the band — and even more so after looking up the guys whose names he didn’t recognize — he felt good about his performance heading into the show, even if his nervousness only increased after watching the set leading up to his number.

“I sneak up onstage, because I didn’t want the introduction,” continued Burr. He ended up getting one anyway — to a smattering of golf claps — and realized to his dawning horror that his own introduction was followed by one for Slash and McKagan. “I had three seconds to process this, and then Slash just goes [imitates opening chords]. I was like, ‘Oh God, here we go.’ I couldn’t feel my legs! Somehow I was able to get through it. I screwed up like three times, but I came back on time.”
