Early Bids for Signed Copy of the Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’ Album Shoot Past $110,000

Money, as the Beatles famously opined, can’t buy you love. What it can get you, however, is a signed edition of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ — though, alas, the price is skyrocketing.

It seems this special copy of the iconic 1967 art-rock project has created a frenzy of activity for Dallas, Texas-based Heritage Auctions, as advance bids have shot past its estimated price by tens of thousands of dollars, according to the Associated Press. George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr each autographed the album across the top of its inside gatefold.

Gary Shrum, the auction company’s consignment director, says the bidding war has “taken on a life of its own” as fans quickly pushed the item’s price up from an opening cost of $15,000 to well past $110,000. Heritage Auctions expected the album to sell for about $30,000.

Shrum says bidders have been struck by the carefully preserved item, and the appearance of signatures from all four Beatles — including the late Lennon and Harrison. “People are responding to that,” he adds.

If you’re one of them, there’s still time to act. The auction itself won’t take place until March 30, though Shrum says the price for this rarity might exceed $150,000 by then.
