Watch a Man Play the Beatles on His Guitar While Undergoing Brain Surgery

The Beatles have been played in operating rooms countless times over the years — but never quite like this.

As captured in the above video, a 33-year-old Brazilian banker named Anthony Kulkamp Dias recently performed a number of songs — including “Yesterday” — on his acoustic guitar while undergoing brain surgery. This surreal scene unfolded due to doctors’ efforts to perform cerebral monitoring during the procedure, a technique used to prevent injuries to the brain that can occur while it’s being operated on.

“By keeping the patient awake during surgery, these areas can be monitored in real time. A kind of mapping of important areas can be done,” clinical director Dr. Jean Abreu Machado told the Daily Telegraph. Noting that while the brain has no pain sensors, getting into it requires invasive procedures that need to be anesthetized, Machado added, “It really is a great challenge for the whole surgery team.”

Kulkamp Dias, who reportedly played guitar professionally for 20 years before changing careers, seemed rather unfazed by the whole thing, quipping that the doctors even asked for a repeat performance of one song “so I had an encore.” He did, however, admit to facing certain physical challenges while balancing his guitar on his stomach during the surgery.

“I played six songs at certain times,” he added. “My right hand was a bit weaker because that was the side that they were operating on. So I stopped and rested. I was interspersing songs and talking with them.”

All’s well that ends well for Kulkamp Dias, who’s pictured in the Daily Telegraph report seemingly none the worse for wear. His recovery brings a scary ordeal for his family to a sweet conclusion: His tumor was discovered 15 days after the birth of his son, who inspired one of the songs he performed during surgery.
