This Day in Rock History: August 5

On this day in rock history, Creedence Clearwater Revival found their “musical center” with Green River, their third album and second of the three LPs they released in 1969. It was a watershed moment for the band, which was on a creative and commercial roll.

Meanwhile, the Stooges released one of the most incendiary debut albums in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. Their self-titled LP featured a flurry of distorted guitars, howled vocals and train-crash rhythms. Within a few years, it became the template for many of punk’s best bands and remains an influential record to this day.

Aug. 5 also marks the release of Pat Benatar‘s second album, and first Top 10, Crimes of Passion, as well as her first Top 10 single, 1980’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” Also on this day in rock history in 1983, David Crosby was sentenced to prison after his arrest in a Dallas nightclub in April 1982 for possessing a .45-caliber handgun and freebasing cocaine. He would later appeal the decision and serve some time, but not for the entire sentence he was given.
