Written by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, 'As Tears Go By' was originally recorded by songbird beauty Marianne Faithfull, who took it to No. 22 on the US charts in late 1964.

The Rolling Stones recorded their own version, released it nearly a year later, and took it to No. 6. A beautiful ballad, the Stones take is based around acoustic guitar, vocal and strings, and is at a slightly slower tempo than Marianne's more sprightly version. Notably, it was one of Mick and Keith's first attempts at writing their own material. Their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, knew the writing was not only on the wall, but in the bank, and told the duo to get their words and chords in gear.
