Two very different bands with very ordinary-sounding names line up against each other in round one of the UCR Hall of Fame voting this month as the Steve Miller Band meets Alice Cooper

Each month, our readers will determine which of eight legendary artists or bands is immortalized forever for their contributions to classic-rock history. Which means you have to choose between 'Fly Like an Eagle' and 'Under My Wheels,' or between 'The Joker' and 'Killer.' We don't envy you.

Alice Cooper -- and we're nominating both the band and their "godfather of shock rock" frontman's impressive solo career here -- created some of the most dramatic and influential rock and roll of the early '70s, and brought a new level of theatricality to the concert setting.

It's highly unlikely that Steve Miller ever brought a snake onstage, or stuck his head in a guillotine, but in the mid-'70s he created a string of hits that still dominate classic-rock airwaves to this day -- including 'Take the Money and Run' and 'Swingtown.'

So which band moves onto the semifinals? Readers can vote once a day from now until 11:59PM ET on July 14. You can read the Hall of Fame’s official rules right here. Be sure to mark your calendars for Aug. 1, when the third entrant into the Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame is revealed.
