In celebration of the 100th birthday of Fenway Park, members of the Boston Red Sox pitch in on the commemorative album, ’100 Year Anniversary of Fenway Park,’ singing and performing songs by Boston bands such as the Cars and Aerosmith.

While much has been made of the drama in the Boston Red Sox club house for the past year — drinking on the job, the exit of the manager and GM and some mudslinging between the new manager and the team, tons of injuries, a 4-8 start — there’s now some positive, rock ‘n’ roll-oriented stuff surrounding the storied franchise. Music is a healer, so perhaps this little compilation CD can be a salve on the Sox problems. Okay, that’s wishful thinking!

The album, officially licensed by the MLB Players Association, features contemporary recordings of fan favorites that are often heard bellowing at Fenway during games and that are associated with the area’s bands. Current and former Sox players contribute along with special guests and children from the team’s charitable Red Sox Scholars program.

‘Sweet Caroline’ features home run machine David “Big Papi’ Ortiz providing background vocals and improv while Clay Buchholz plays acoustic guitar. Jarrod Saltalamacchia churns out additional guitar licks to “Dream On.’ Daniel Bard plays acoustic guitar on album’s debut single, ‘Let the Good Times Roll.’ He is joined by Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone (who also fronted Van Halen for a hot minute) and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.

A journeyman classic rocker was one of the key sessions players, as well. The uber-talented Kenny Aronoff, who has worked with everyone from John Mellencamp to John Fogerty to Chickenfoot, contributed drums.

A portion of the proceeds benefit the Red Sox Foundation, the official award-winning team charity of the Boston Red Sox, and its Red Sox Scholars and inner city youth baseball programs.

Pre-order for this “must own” set begins on May 1 here. It will be available exclusively for purchase at the Yawkey Way Store/The Official Red Sox Team Store, as well as at all traditional and digital retailers on May 22.
