You Can Now Drink Johnny Winter Moonshine

New York-based distillery Dutch's Spirits is honoring the memory of late guitar legend Johnny Winter with the production of a pot-distilled, small-batch moonshine.

Johnny Winter's Mean Town Moonshine was created using a list of ingredients that includes "pure cane sugar and the spring-fed waters of Harvest Homestead Farm," where infamous mobster Dutch Schultz — the company's namesake — reportedly ran his operation. "You'll find our Mean Town Moonshine to be smooth and clean, with just a slight roughness around the edges, mirroring the blues Johnny became famous for," promises Dutch's. "The true spirit of the blues."

Mean Town Moonshine arrives roughly a year after Winter died at the age of 70, shortly before the release of his final studio album, Step Back. Winter's death silenced one of rock's most inventive and prolific guitarists, ending a long and fruitful recording career that included bestsellers like 1969's Second Winter and an array of classic cuts collected on his 2014 box set, True to the Blues.

As many Winter fans are aware, he struggled with various addictions for many years, and toward the end of his life, he was completely sober. "I am not taking any drugs and I am not drinking," he said in a 2012 interview. "I am not smoking cigarettes anymore and I am not doing anything bad. I never thought this would be possible. I never thought I would see the day that I didn’t have any vices at all."
