Singer, songwriter, and all around musical talent Kevin Ayers passed away on Feb. 20, he was 68 years old. Ayers first came to prominence as bass player in the Soft Machine, one of the strongest bands on the same underground club circuit that spawned Pink Floyd.

After leaving Soft Machine following a US tour opening for Jimi Hendrix, Ayers issued a hefty batch of solo LP's throughout the '70s that showcased his utterly unique way with a song. He recorded very sporadically through the next few decades. His final album, 'The Unfairground,' was released in 2007 to glowing reviews. Ayers died in the village of Montolieu, France. He is survived by two daughters and a sister.
