Dick Kniss, who spent four decades backing up the iconic folk-rock trio Peter, Paul and Mary and singer-songwriter John Denver, passed away Jan. 25 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the age of 74. He played upright bass for Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, and helped Denver pen ‘Sunshine on My Shoulders,' one of his biggest hits. He was “our intrepid bass player for almost as long as we performed together,” Peter Yarrow said of Kniss in a statement.
